In Last week's post,
one of the slower functions in App Designer I mentioned was
the "Find In..." search of PeopleCode. At some
installations, a full database search will take a very
long time.
Now Duncan writes to suggest a very
simple way around this difficulty: Simply export all of the
PeopleCode in the database into a text file. Keep that file
around and search it when
you need to scan all of the PeopleCode for a particular
string.
Why didn't I think of that? It should have been
an obvious application of the tip given in my 12/6/04 column,
Exporting
PeopleCode as Text. Go there for step-by-step
instructions on how to create a simple text file containing
all of the PeopleCode in your database.
Duncan reminded me of the same technique and continued,
"It takes a while, but you only have to do it once.
Thereafter, every time you are looking for some PeopleCode
you can just fire up UltraEdit or whatever text editor
you use and search the file. It's going to be around 50MB,
but it's still significantly quicker (and with a better
search interface) than looking in App Designer."
Of course, you don't want to wait until you need to do the
search. The file should be created in advance so you have
it when it's needed.
I still don't know why "Find In..." is sometimes so slow,
but with this tip, it doesn't really matter.
