This begins what I hope will be a fairly regular series of columns on PeopleSoft-related technical topics. Look for a new
entry about once a week, give or take, starting February 1.
Don't worry—the topics discussed won't be too technical. We won't be optimizing Tuxedo here. But we will talk
about PeopleTools, customization, SQR, interfaces, usability issues, the development process, and similar areas that should be
familiar to most developers and to
many functional users as well. You may feel, in some cases, that I'm stating the obvious—that "everybody knows that!". Well,
I learned about many of these topics the hard way, and hopefully there will be a few tips here and there that you can put
to good use. Even if you don't learn anything new, maybe the discussion will trigger an idea that you can develop.
I'll even take sides, at times, on a few controversial questions: App Engine vs. SQR, for example.
That's not to say that I'll have all the answers...or even many good ones. So please let me know when I'm wrong. Talk back!
Let's close this intro with a quick, easy tip...
Create a "home page"
Do you send out new links/URLs to your coworkers each time an environment is created, or a port is changed? Are you frustrated when
they inadvertently use an old link or "favorite" and then report that the system is down? Stop sending out those emails and
create a "home page" instead.
You don't need a web server for this. Just create a .HTML file somewhere on a shared drive. On this page, include a link to
each development, testing and production environment, along with a short explanation of how that environment is to be
used. You might want to include other useful links, such as to PeopleSoft's site, internal documentation folders or
sites, tools, and other links. Add a logo or some other graphics, save the file, and it's ready for use.
Send out the path to this file in an email. Encourage your users to click on this link and then make it their home page, or
at least their only PeopleSoft "favorite". Then, in the future, you can give access to a new or modified environment
simply by changing this page in a text editor.
